KEEP BREATHING

No matter where we are we have our breath. Many times we can calm ourselves quickly by simply paying attention to our breath for a few minutes.

If you are feeling drained, try sitting quietly and imagine a sturdy cord extending from the base of your spine downward into the earth. Imagine drawing some of the powerful earth energy up your cord into the centre of your chest. Then imagine opening the top of your head to allow a silver cord to extend upward into the sky. Let healing, refreshing energy flow down your cord into the centre of your chest connecting with the earth energy. Soon you should experience a shift in energy.

At other times you will be overamped with energy - for example, in a heated argument. If you want to calm down, you might take yourself to another room or neutral quiet place and sit with eyes closed. Again it may help to visualise a sturdy cord connected to the end of your spinal cord and extending downward into the earth. Let your excess energy drain off down that cord and return to the earth energy.

Eastern masters have perfected the ability to cultivate energy with the breath, and there are many good books on such ancient practices as pranayama and chi kung. You might want to practice these. See our suggested reading list on page 128.

In either case of being over- or undercharged, a brief five- or ten-minute walk can also do wonders.

BRINGING IN LIGHT

A simple exercise that you can do to energise yourself or help solve a problem is to imagine surrounding yourself with light. This is especially good to do on breaks from work or anywhere that you don’t want to call attention to yourself. Close your eyes briefly (or rest your closed eyes on the palms of your hands). Imagine a great shower of light bathing over you, enveloping you in radiance. Bask in this inner sunbath. Feel the warmth and brilliance of the light. Imagine the room you are sitting in to be flooded with this light. Take a few minutes to intensify the image. Experiment a few times a day for a week and see if you notice any changes in yourself or those around you. They’re getting the light and energy, too, whether they know it or not!
